To Retire Or Not To Retire. That Is The Question

To Retire or not to retireRecently a number of individuals I have been associated with have opted to retire. Most of those retiring I have enjoyed being associated with and will miss being around them, others, not so much. In one cases, the only way a certain individual will know he has retired is the location where he spends his day. The daily production will remain unchanged.

I find the concept of being retired very intimidating. I guess I like the order of a daily schedule, of going to work each day. Getting up at the same time, coming home at the same time, dozing off in my recliner at the same time, and going to bed at the same time is very structured and helps me live life stress free. Once I no longer have that structure in my life I am fearful that life will become disorganized and cluttered. That being the case, I have been considering things I can do each day to help stay organized and structured. Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • Go to Walmart each day, stand outside the exit and welcome people to the parking lot.
  • Walk around town with a cardboard sign that says “Help the Homely”.
  • Go into Target and reorganize shoes in the box so that each box has either two right shoes or two left shoes. Most people only try on one shoe, so the big surprise will be when they decide to wear the pair for the first time.
  • Approach beggars and ask for spare change.
  • Volunteer to act as a “Big Brother” for priveliged children.

That is a start for now. I am sure I can expand this list by the time I actually do retire. Also, I am open to suggestions so should anyone have any ideas to add to this list, feel free to comment.

Those are my thoughts, what are yours?
